April is Earth Month

Sunday, April 20, 2025
All Day

As we continue to consider resilience during this season of Lent, it’s a great time to look to the natural world for encouragement. It’s also a great time to consider how we can assist in creation’s care and stewardship. Maybe you are aware that April is Earth month, leading up to April 22, Earth Day.

The theme for this year is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ as Earth Day celebrates its 50th anniversary. The focus is on renewable energy which can fuel our future without causing further harm to the planet. An additional focus is the reduction of plastics and elimination of single use plastic. There is a lot of valuable information including these initiatives at https://action.earthday.org.

Some other actions you can take during April (and continue taking) to lessen your footprint on this beautiful world: eat less meat and dairy; purchase paper products sourced from bamboo instead of trees; shop local and minimize online orders with delivery, such as Amazon. Remember, as consumers we have the power to affect the bottom line of businesses that are not earth friendly!

You might also consider attending an Earth Month Event. Check out the various Oregon Spring Clean Up events offered through Solve. Or attend New Seasons Annual Recycling Drive at Revolution Hall on April 19.

Right here at Rose City Park Presbyterian—where we believe part of our spiritual work is the care of God’s creative work—we have lots of ways to get involved:

Saturday, April 19: RCPPC hosting Earth Day activities for kids at the Hollywood Farmer’s Market (please see Kate Sechrist if you would like to help)

Tuesday April 22: Earth Day Movie & Pizza Night (5:30-7:30pm in Fellowship Hall) Join the Adult Discipleship Committee for a showing of Gratitude Revealed, a documentary that took 40 years to make exploring how we can live more meaningful lives full of gratitude! We’ll share a pizza dinner, discussion and dessert! Please sign up here.

Sunday, April 27: All Church Hike, Noon - 2pm. Bring your lunch to have during coffee hour then plan to carpool leaving church shortly before noon.  Announcement will be made in Fellowship Hall to confirm attendees and time for leaving.  We will be trying out a new location down by Wilsonville - Graham Oaks Nature Park.

Tuesday, April 29: EMO Interfaith Advocacy Day (includes Climate Health & Safety), Join us to advocate for our planet with the Oregon State Legislature. Click here to learn more about this event.

However you are celebrating, we hope you take time to take in the glories of spring as the world around us explodes in color…and in thanks!
